Free-Size Widgets: Resize and Arrange Your Dashboard

Every widget on a dashboard can be any size you like, not only Small, Medium or Large. Drag an edge to make a chart wider or a quick stat shorter, and the widget redraws to fit its new box. That lets you build a dashboard from blocks: a stack of small quick stats beside one wide chart, a tall headline number, a table that spans the page.

Before you start

  • You need edit access to the dashboard.

  • Click Edit in the dashboard's toolbar, or press Cmd+E (Mac) or Ctrl+E (Windows). Resizing and moving only happen in edit mode.

  • Free-size widgets are on for every dashboard. Your existing widgets keep their size until you change it.

Resize a widget by dragging

  1. In edit mode, hover over a widget. Small grips appear on its edges and corners.

  2. Drag a grip:

    • Right edge to change the width.

    • Bottom edge to change the height.

    • Bottom-right corner to change both.

    • Left edge or bottom-left corner to grow or shrink the widget to the left, leaving its right edge where it is (see Dead space below).

  3. Let go. The new size saves on its own.

While you drag, a dot grid appears, the widget's outline shows where it will land, and a label shows its exact size, for example 750 × 300. The widget redraws live, and the widgets beside it move along.

  • Sizes move in steps of 25 pixels, so widgets line up neatly. Three quick stats 300 pixels wide fill exactly the width of one 900-pixel chart.

  • With the keyboard: click a grip, then use the arrow keys to move it one step at a time. Hold Shift to move four steps.

Set an exact size

  1. In edit mode, click the gear on the widget.

  2. Under Size, choose a Preset (Small, Medium or Large), or Custom and type a Width and Height, or use the − and + buttons. A typed value rounds to the nearest 25 pixels. The range each widget allows is shown under the box.

  3. Save the widget.

Dragging a widget that's on a preset makes it Custom at its current size. Choosing a preset again puts it back on that preset's size.

How widgets fit their box

  • Charts stretch to fill the box, and their axes and legend adjust.

  • Quick stats scale their number down to fit a small box. Font sizes set in widget formatting are the most they'll grow to.

  • Tables scroll inside their box when the rows don't fit. A table's Dynamically sized preset makes the box grow to fit its rows instead.

  • The largest box is 2,400 × 1,600 pixels. The smallest is each widget's Small size.

  • A metric matrix and a heat map size themselves to their contents, so they have no grips. A divider only changes height.

Dead space: leaving room on purpose

Dead space is an empty block that holds a gap open, for example to line a widget up under the one above it. It's invisible when you view the dashboard. In edit mode it shows as a faint dashed box:

  • Add it yourself: drag Dead space from the bar of draggable widgets at the top of the dashboard into a row, then resize it like any widget.

  • Qvasa adds it for you when you resize a widget from its left edge, or drop a widget partway along a row. The gap that leaves becomes dead space.

  • Two dead spaces side by side merge into one. Dead space that Qvasa added is removed again once it ends up at the end of a row; dead space you placed yourself stays until you delete it.

  • To remove dead space, hover over it in edit mode and click the ✕ in its top-right corner. To move it, drag it by its outline.

Moving widgets

  • Grab a widget anywhere on its card in edit mode and drag it. The cursor changes to a hand and the widget gets a soft outline where a press would pick it up. Drop it beside another widget, under one to stack them in a column, or between rows to start a new row.

  • On a chart, dragging across the plot zooms into that part of the chart instead (the cursor shows a crosshair over the plot). Grab the chart by its title or its edges to move it.

  • Deleting a row that has widgets in it shows Row deleted with Undo for five seconds. An empty row goes straight away.

Troubleshooting

  • I don't see any grips. Make sure you're in edit mode, then hover over the widget. Metric matrices and heat maps have none.

  • The widget won't get any smaller. It's at its smallest size, which is its Small preset.

  • There's a gap I can't get rid of. It's probably dead space. In edit mode, hover over the gap and click its ✕.

  • My chart zoomed when I tried to move it. You grabbed the plot. Grab the title or the edge of the card instead.
